Historic Significance

The Custom House Block at 419 Main Street in Rockland, Maine, stands as a significant reminder of the city’s transformation during the nineteenth century from a small coastal settlement into one of the nation’s leading maritime and industrial communities. Built in 1853 after a devastating downtown fire, the building represented the confidence of local businessmen who believed Rockland’s future depended on rebuilding with permanent brick structures, expanding commerce, and strengthening the city’s role as a port of trade. The building was constructed for two prominent local figures, Captain Isaac C. Abbott and Alfred H. Kimball, whose careers reflected two essential parts of Rockland’s economy: maritime enterprise and financial development.
