Southard Mill (Later Ames Mill)
The Southard Mill was constructed in 1881 on Front Street overlooking the Kennebec River in Richmond, Sagadahoc County, Maine. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, Richmond was experiencing a gradual economic transition. For decades the town had prospered as one of Maine's leading shipbuilding centers, but the decline of wooden sailing vessels encouraged local entrepreneurs to seek new industries capable of sustaining employment and investment. Thomas Jefferson Southard, already recognized as Richmond's foremost shipbuilder, merchant, and developer, responded by expanding beyond maritime enterprises into textile manufacturing. Through the Southard Manufacturing Company, he established a modern cotton mill dedicated to the manufacture of woven cotton bags, creating one of Richmond's first large-scale industrial facilities independent of shipbuilding.¹
Completed in 1881, the brick mill embodied the latest principles of late nineteenth-century industrial design. Steam power was generated in a separate engine house containing a 100-horsepower Corliss-type engine that distributed power through a network of line shafts, belts, and pulleys extending throughout the factory. The building housed approximately 180 power looms and more than 4,000 spindles, enabling the mill to manufacture cotton cloth specifically woven into bags for agricultural and commercial purposes. At full production the factory employed approximately 150 men and women, making it one of Richmond's largest employers outside the shipbuilding industry.²
Unlike many New England textile mills that concentrated on woven cloth for garments, the Southard Manufacturing Company specialized in heavy cotton bagging. Flour mills, grain dealers, fertilizer companies, and manufacturers increasingly relied upon machine-made cotton sacks rather than hand-sewn containers, creating a growing regional market for standardized bag production. The Southard Mill was established to meet this demand and represented an important example of Maine's efforts to diversify its manufacturing economy during the 1880s.²
Following Thomas J. Southard's death in 1896, the factory entered a period of changing ownership that paralleled the broader restructuring of New England's textile industry. By 1895 the property had been acquired by Willie & Sears, who converted the mill from cotton bag production to yarn manufacturing. A few years later the Kennebec Spinning Mill Company assumed operation of the facility, producing worsted cotton and silk textiles. In 1921 the Richmond Worsted Company continued textile production within the building, extending its industrial life well into the twentieth century.³
During the following decades the property became associated with Ames Worsted Company, whose long occupancy gradually transformed the building's identity within the community. While nineteenth-century records consistently referred to the facility as the Southard Manufacturing Company or Southard Mill, local residents increasingly adopted the name Ames Mill during the twentieth century because of its lengthy association with Ames' textile operations. Today the later name is the one most commonly used, although the building's origins remain firmly rooted in Thomas J. Southard's industrial vision.¹³
After textile production declined, the former mill accommodated a succession of manufacturing, warehouse, and commercial uses before eventually becoming largely vacant. Despite these changes, the structure survives as one of Richmond's most important industrial landmarks and one of the few remaining physical reminders of the town's transition from wooden shipbuilding to factory manufacturing.
