Dana Warp Mill, c.1866
Dana Warp Mill, c.1866
Presumpscot River, (Saccarappa), Westbrook, Cumberland County, Maine
This photograph is of the Dana Warp Mill, on the island in the Presumpscot River, as it looked after it had been rebuilt after a fire in 1893. The fire destroyed a section of the building on Labor Day, 1893.
The business came into being after Woodbury K. Dana, purchased a small mill on Bridge Street, in 1866, and began manufacturing cotton warp. The business soon outgrew the original buildings and in 1879, Dana purchased a woolen mill on the island, built in 1876, from George Warren. Dana continued to expand the mill over the years.
Location: Saccarappa, Westbrook, Cumberland County, ME
The correct and standard way is:
👉 a.) Danna Warp Mill, Presumpscot River, (Saccarappa), Westbrook, Cumberland County, Maine
Why this is correct:
In U.S. geographic naming conventions (used by historians, archives, and the National Register of Historic Places), the order typically goes:
Specific place → city/town → county → state
So:
Danna Warp Mill (site/building)
Presumpscot River (feature)
Saccarappa (neighborhood/village)
Westbrook (city)
Cumberland County
Maine
What’s wrong with option b:
It switches the order to county before city, which is not standard in formal geographic or archival usage.
If you’re aiming for a polished historical or archival label, option a is the one to use.
