Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company (Works): A Riverfront Industrial Enterprise, Union River, Ellsworth, Hancock County, Maine
Part I — Origins, Founding Firms, Early Operations, and Incorporation
The Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company, later known as Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works, was one of the most important metalworking and machinery enterprises in Ellsworth, Hancock County, Maine. Located along the Union River, the company provided essential manufacturing, repair, and fabrication services for the region’s industries during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Unlike the lumber and grain mills that processed local resources, the foundry produced the machinery, castings, and repairs necessary for other industries to operate. Its history represents the transition of Ellsworth from traditional river-powered manufacturing toward specialized industrial production.¹
The origins of Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company came from an earlier tradition of local foundries and machine shops. During the nineteenth century, industrial communities depended upon skilled mechanics who could repair machinery, produce replacement parts, and manufacture specialized equipment. In Ellsworth, these services supported the town’s sawmills, shipyards, mills, and other manufacturing businesses located along the Union River.²
One of the earlier firms associated with this tradition was Gording & Standish, a foundry and machine-shop operation in Ellsworth. Albert H. Davis’s History of Ellsworth, Maine identifies Edmund Bonsey as having begun his industrial career in the foundry and machine shop of Gording & Standish. Through this early training, Bonsey gained experience in mechanical work and became part of the skilled workforce that supported Ellsworth’s industrial development.³
Another important predecessor was J. H. & E. K. Hopkins, which operated a foundry and machine shop before the establishment of Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works. Burton B. Walker, who later became one of the leading figures in the company’s history, entered the Hopkins machine shop and developed his mechanical knowledge there. When the Hopkins firm dissolved in 1896, Walker continued in the machine-shop business and later helped establish the incorporated Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works.⁴
The Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps provide evidence that Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company was already operating as an independent industrial concern by the late nineteenth century. The 1884 Sanborn Map of Ellsworth, Sheet 1, identifies the company along the Union River in a location separate from the nearby H. M. & B. Hall Water Street industrial complex. This demonstrates that the foundry was not created after the decline of the Hall industries but existed alongside them as a separate business.⁵
The Union River location provided important advantages. The company was situated near other industrial users that required machinery repair, fabricated parts, and metal components. The waterfront location also connected the business to Ellsworth’s maritime economy, where vessels and waterfront industries depended upon local mechanical expertise.⁶
The 1889 Sanborn Map, Sheet 3, confirms the continued operation of Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company. During this period, the company functioned as a traditional foundry and machine shop, providing casting, machining, and repair services to local industries. Its survival demonstrates the continuing need for skilled mechanical production during a period when many businesses still depended on locally maintained machinery.⁷
The work performed by the company required several specialized processes. Foundry operations involved preparing molds, melting metal, pouring castings, and finishing finished components. Machine-shop work required precision tools and skilled machinists capable of repairing engines, manufacturing parts, and producing equipment for industrial customers. Pattern-making was also an essential part of foundry work because wooden patterns were required to create molds for cast iron products.⁸
By the end of the nineteenth century, Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company had developed beyond a simple repair shop. It had become a specialized industrial enterprise serving a wide range of customers, including lumber manufacturers, marine businesses, agricultural operations, and other industries throughout Hancock County. The company’s ability to manufacture and repair machinery gave it an important role in supporting the region’s economy.⁹
The 1901 Sanborn Map, Sheet 3, shows Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company continuing its operation along the Union River. At the same time, other nearby industries were beginning to change. The former Hall lumber and milling complex had separated into different ownerships, with Greely & Brady operating the Saw & Planing Mill and Grist Mill. The foundry, however, continued as an independent and growing enterprise.¹⁰
The company’s formal reorganization occurred in 1907. According to Davis’s History of Ellsworth, Maine, the Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works was incorporated in that year, with Burton B. Walker serving as general manager. Incorporation reflected the company’s development from a local machine shop into a larger industrial organization capable of expanding its facilities and operations.¹¹
The 1907 Sanborn Map, Sheet 3, shows Ellsworth Foundry continuing in its established location along the Union River. The map indicates that the company remained an active industrial operation while other portions of the Water Street manufacturing district experienced decline. The company’s continued presence demonstrates the growing importance of specialized machinery production in early twentieth-century Ellsworth.¹²
By 1907, Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works represented the continuation of decades of local mechanical expertise. The company combined the traditions of earlier Ellsworth foundries with newer industrial methods, positioning itself for expansion during the first decades of the twentieth century. Under Burton B. Walker’s leadership, the business developed into one of the region’s most significant manufacturing operations.¹³
Part II — Expansion, Products, Buildings, and Industrial Development, 1901–1914
The first decade of the twentieth century marked a period of continued growth and specialization for Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company. While several older industries along the Union River, including lumber-processing operations connected with the former H. M. & B. Hall complex, began to decline, the foundry continued operating as an independent industrial enterprise. Its success depended upon the increasing need for machinery, repairs, castings, and specialized manufacturing throughout eastern Maine.¹⁴
The 1901 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map, Sheet 3, identifies Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company as an active industrial operation along the Union River. At the same time, the nearby Water Street complex was undergoing ownership changes. The former Hall Saw & Planing Mill and Grist Mill were operated by Greely & Brady, while Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Company maintained its own separate location and operations.¹⁵
The company’s continued operation through 1901 and 1907 demonstrates that its business model differed from the older resource-processing industries nearby. A sawmill depended upon timber supplies, and a grist mill depended upon local grain production, but a foundry and machine works served many industries by producing the equipment and repairs those businesses required. This allowed Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works to adapt to changing economic conditions.¹⁶
By September 1914, the Sanborn Fire Insurance Map, Sheet 5, records the company under its expanded name, Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works. The map documents a greatly enlarged industrial complex extending along the Union River. The expansion included separate buildings and work areas designed for specialized manufacturing processes.¹⁷
The largest manufacturing structure was identified as Building A. This building contained three principal sections:
Section 1: Foundry
1½ stories

Section 2: Flask and Scrap Iron area
Section 3: Pattern Shop
The arrangement of these departments shows that the company operated a complete foundry system. The foundry area handled metal melting and casting. The flask section supported the preparation of molds, while scrap iron provided reusable material for casting operations. The pattern shop produced the wooden patterns required to create accurately shaped metal components.¹⁸
A second major structure, Building B, contained the machine and administrative facilities. It consisted of:

This layout demonstrates that the company had developed into a complete manufacturing plant rather than a small repair facility. Foundry operations, machining, pattern construction, woodworking, and administration were organized into separate departments.¹⁹
The products manufactured by Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works reflected the needs of Maine’s industrial economy. The company produced castings, machinery components, and specialized equipment used by mills and other businesses. Later industrial records identify the company’s products as including mill machinery, gasoline engines, and castings, demonstrating the continued expansion of its manufacturing capabilities.²⁰
The company’s machine shop was central to its success. Skilled machinists operated equipment capable of producing precision parts and repairing industrial machinery. The ability to manufacture replacement components locally reduced dependence on distant suppliers and allowed nearby industries to resume operation quickly when machinery failed.²¹
Pattern-making and woodworking were also essential parts of the operation. Before metal could be cast, a wooden pattern had to be created. The presence of a separate woodworking department in the 1914 complex shows that Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works maintained the specialized skills necessary to complete the entire manufacturing process from design to finished product.²²
One of the most significant expansions documented in 1914 was the company’s development of marine facilities. Behind the 214 Water Street building, extending toward the river, the company operated a large boat shop equipped with five marine railways extending into the Union River. These facilities allowed vessels to be removed from the water for repair, construction, and maintenance.²³
The marine operations connected Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works with the town’s long maritime tradition. The company was no longer limited to land-based industrial machinery; it also served vessels and waterfront businesses requiring specialized repair and construction services. The combination of foundry, machine shop, and marine facilities made the company one of the most diversified industrial operations on the Union River.²⁴
Additional support structures expanded the company’s capabilities:

The creation of an alleyway between the 214 and 215 Water Street buildings provided access behind the main complex and improved movement of materials, equipment, and vessels throughout the property.²⁵
By 1914, Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works had developed into a fully integrated industrial plant. Its departments included foundry work, pattern making, machining, woodworking, marine repair, and storage. The company represented the changing character of Ellsworth manufacturing: while older lumber and grain industries declined, specialized industrial production continued to expand.
Part III — Workforce, Final Years, Destruction, and Industrial Legacy
By the early twentieth century, Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works had become one of the most specialized manufacturing enterprises in Hancock County. The company’s expansion from a traditional foundry and machine shop into a complete industrial complex required a skilled workforce capable of performing many different types of work. Unlike lumber and grain-processing mills that relied heavily on repetitive labor, the foundry depended upon skilled tradesmen whose knowledge was essential to producing machinery, castings, and repairs.²⁶
The exact number of employees during the 1914 expansion has not been located in surviving records. However, the size and organization of the plant shown on the 1914 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map indicate a substantial workforce divided among several departments. The company operated a foundry, flask and scrap iron area, pattern shop, machine shop, woodworking department, offices, boat shop, and marine railway facilities. Each department required workers with different skills and responsibilities.²⁷
The foundry department employed workers involved in the production of cast metal components. These included:
molders, who prepared sand molds for casting;
core makers, who created interior openings and passages within castings;
furnace workers, who melted and handled iron;
laborers, who moved raw materials, scrap iron, and finished products.
The machine shop required skilled machinists who operated lathes, drills, and other machine tools. These workers produced precision components, repaired damaged equipment, and manufactured replacement parts for industrial customers throughout the region.²⁸
The pattern shop and woodworking department required another specialized group of employees. Pattern makers created accurate wooden models used to form molds for castings. Because the quality of the final metal product depended upon the accuracy of the pattern, these workers were among the most highly skilled employees in a foundry operation.²⁹
The marine division created additional employment opportunities. The company’s 1914 boat shop and five marine railways allowed workers to repair and service vessels on the Union River. These employees performed tasks associated with boat maintenance, hauling, construction, and mechanical repair.³⁰
By the early 1920s, employment records provide a documented workforce figure. The Maine manufacturing directories list Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works as employing approximately 40 workers. The company manufactured mill machinery, gasoline engines, and castings, showing that it remained a significant industrial employer after the 1914 expansion.³¹
The company’s continued operation into the 1920s was closely associated with Burton B. Walker. Walker had entered the earlier Hopkins machine shop, gained experience in local mechanical work, and became general manager after the incorporation of Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works in 1907. Under his leadership, the plant expanded repeatedly and became recognized as one of the most complete manufacturing plants of its type in Maine.³²
Walker’s death in 1921 occurred during a period when the company was still operating. Although his leadership had shaped the company’s growth, the business continued for several years afterward. The final end of Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works came in 1923, when the plant was destroyed.³³
The destruction of the plant ended the operation under the Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works name, but it did not end Ellsworth’s tradition of machine manufacturing. The company’s employees and managers carried their mechanical knowledge into a new organization. In 1924, Everett B. Morey, A. E. Farnsworth, and C. K. Foster established the Ellsworth Machine Company, continuing local production and repair work.³⁴
The history of Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works illustrates the changing nature of industrial development in Maine. The company began with the nineteenth-century tradition of local foundries and machine shops, developed into a modern manufacturing enterprise after incorporation in 1907, and reached its greatest expansion with the 1914 riverfront complex.
Its importance came not only from the products it manufactured but also from the skilled workforce it developed. Foundry workers, machinists, pattern makers, woodworkers, and marine employees represented a specialized industrial community that supported the broader economy of Hancock County.
The company’s lifecycle followed the pattern of many New England industrial businesses: creation from earlier craft traditions, expansion during industrial growth, adaptation to changing markets, and eventual closure after physical destruction. However, the skills developed at Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works survived through successor businesses, preserving Ellsworth’s role as a center for mechanical manufacturing and repair.
From its earliest predecessor shops to its destruction in 1923, Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works remained one of the most important examples of industrial adaptation along the Union River.³⁵

The legacy of Ellsworth Foundry & Machine Works demonstrates the ability of Maine industries to adapt from traditional river-based manufacturing into specialized mechanical production during the early twentieth century.
